So I got this link for an energy expenditure calculator that is pretty neat.
http://www.portmancalculator.com/
For shits and giggles I punched in one of my last Full distance Triathlon races I did. That happened to be Rev3 Cedar Point Full Race Report here.
Info is as follows (in minutes):
Swim= 63
Bike= 293
Run = 221
Race day weight was ~175#’s (maybe a little more)
Put all this into the little calculator thingy and push go and you get something like this:
So, What does that equate to? Let’s figure this out.
“They” say in order to burn ONE pound of FAT you have to have a calorie deficit of 3,500….. so a Full distance triathlon can burn 3lbs of fat! not that much really if you think about it, but hey it’s only 10hrs of work…. yeah!
Where does one even THINK about getting fuel for this? Perhaps you think you can cram down some energy Gels to replace all of this? At ~100 cals per Powerbar Gel that would mean 105 gels OR a gel every 5.75 minutes….. that’s not going to sit well!
How about something more relateable to the “Mass” public? (perhaps some pun intended there)
My favorite Mc’y D’s Extra Value Meal is the Double Quater Pounder with Large Fries and a Large Coke! I feel like such a slob after consuming one of those meals, but I love them so! How many of those meals could I eat? Try SIX! But wait! I get to have TWO Oreo Cookies and Cream McFlurries as a treat too! Good times.
Sure that’s not really the ‘best’ fuel, nor are you going to be able to process that so I suggest staying away from McD’s for your long distance triathlon Fuels. Equally so, you aren’t going to be able to live off gels alone. No matter how you slice it, at the end of the day you are going to be in a caloric hole!
I’m hungry now……

Sorry for the delay of game. I’ve been busy…… not sure with what, but busy.
Anywho,onto the show.
Saturday’s Fly-By-Night Duathlon on the Watkins Glen international race track was my 5th year racing this event. My first attempt at this event was in 2008 and I was able to finish 5th overall. I was super excited on that day as it was a definite suprise AND I found a new race that I love.
Since this first race I have been lucky enough to be on the overall podium each year since, with a 2nd in ’09 and two 3rds in ’10 and ’11
I have been a brides maid for years…… and I’m not yet a bride.
This year I finished again on the podium, but as Ricky Bobby says “If you ain’t first,You’re last”. Second step was mine this year, though it wasn’t ‘free’ for the taking, there was a big effort put forth to get there.
It seems every year there are a few new faces that show up to try and take the crown, this year was no different. On the starting line there were the usual player and some new faces. Being a 7 time champion of the event Travis Kuhl was lined up to my right at we normally do. This year had a few Slowtwitch members showing up and ready to raise the bar. Barry McMaster,Brett Long, and George Hade. All very capable individuals. There was also a fantastic showing of Rogues out there as well. With the option of relay’s and the individual race, the Rogue team sets up some ringer relay’s. This year was a combination of Jim Derrick(Run) and Jeff Naylor(bike) and Dave Cook(Run) with Bill Solt(Bike). There were more, but those were the front of the pack guys.

Keeping this blog and training log updated as well as maintain a job and a family and a life sure is a challenge. But I suppose it wouldn’t be fun if it wasn’t a challenge.
My totals for the year up in the corner are way off now. I think I need to spend some time update if that. Maybe tonight after I am done drinking a few beers while I re-wire my bike that has decided it doesn’t like heavy doses of sweat seeping down into the soldered joints.

It was the best of times it was the worst of times…….. Ok maybe not the worst and maybe not the best.
Friday May 4th we packed up Ace and Axl with a couple bags of clothes and a crap ton (metric crap ton) of gear and set off on a trip to Knoxville Tenn. for my first Triathlon of the 2012 season. Revolution3 Knoxville Half
700miles of driving takes more out of you than you might think. I sure give those long haul truckers some credit! The trip down was pretty uneventful with your regular fuel stops and potty breaks making the trip take roughly 12hrs. A long day for sure.
We rolled into Knoxville at 6:30 and found our hotel, which just happened to be 2 blocks from the race expo/finish area. A score in our book.
After we checked in and unloaded our things we hit the ground for some walking around to check out the area. Having been here before, it looked the same. Grabbed a beer in the hotel and called it a night.

This race has the history of being crappy! The weather for the past million years on this particular race day is, has been, and always will be, crappy.
This year was no different.
Bruce, Dave and myself loaded up the truck and hit the road to the first ‘real’ road race of the year that anyone puts any value on locally. The week prior there was much talk of skipping as the history of weather and the current outlook seemed to be ligned up as if there were a ruler involved. It wasn’t until late in the week Friday before the race to be exact that the trigger was pulled. The weather man had promised us streets lined with gold and women in bikini’s it was going to be a spring break haven of glorious weather for racing.
Due to this race destroying me last year I was planning on bringing a less than beat down version of myself to the starting line. So instead of doing any running, biking or swimming I opted for the far less taxing duty of installing a patio and misc other projects around the house on Saturday. The rains came later in the day on Saturday and allowed for much relaxing.
Sunday, Dave rolls to my house and the weather outside is damp…..not raining but damp. That’s ok, because the latest forcast show’s a 0% chance of percipitation at the race start time. We picked up Bruce on the way and continued to follow the squeaking sound of some windsheild wipers for most of the drive. All the while we continually laughed and repeated the 0% chance of rain and nice weather were ahead and the current 35* and moisture laden air was a mere momentary blip on this radar. Well it wasn’t.
That’s not entirely true. I don’t think it was actually raining at the start of the race, but one couldn’t tell as just like in Forest Gump “Sometimes the rain even seemed to come up from the ground”. Read the rest of this story...

It seems like just yesterday that I went through the many lists out there of races that I’d like to do this year. Now the pretending is over. Game day is just around the corner. All the regular races are long since past. The giro’s this year had me wishing I didn’t eat and drink as much as I had this winter….. as they always seem to do. The Skunk Cabbage half marathon was a shocker really, but an indicator that unless I’m insane, the outcome isn’t going to change if I keep doing the same thing. I’ve tried some new things with my training this year but for the most part it’s still the same.
Now it’s April 20th and while the pot smokers of the world are rejoicing in the fact that it’s a Friday this year, I’m seeing posts that TODAY is the last day to sign up for Rev3 Knoxville. This means that the race is really going to happen, and I’ve really signed up for a 70.3mile Triathlon on May 6th. I’m really driving 12+ hrs in just two weeks from today to the South and looking to beat the snot out of myself for 4.5hours (hopefully in the sun)

When things in your life seem almost too much to handle, when 24 hours in a day are not enough, remember the mayonnaise jar and the 2 beers.
A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him.
When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a huge and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls.
He then asked the students if the jar was full.
They agreed that it was.
The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly.
The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls.
He then asked the students again if the jar was full.
They agreed it was.
The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar.
Of course, the sand filled up everything else.
He asked once more if the jar was full..
The students responded with a unanimous ‘yes.’
The professor then produced two Beers from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand.
The students laughed..
‘Now,’ said the professor as the laughter subsided, ‘I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life.
The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions—and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.
The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car..
The sand is everything else—the small stuff.
‘If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls.
The same goes for life.
If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.
Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.
Spend time with your children.
Spend time with your parents.
Visit with grandparents.
Take your spouse out to dinner.
Play another 18.
There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal.
Take care of the golf balls first—the things that really matter.
Set your priorities.
The rest is just sand.
One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the Beer represented.
The professor smiled and said, ‘I’m glad you asked.’
The Beer just shows you that no matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a couple of Beers with a friend.
I wonder if Friday is the “Update your website because people are sick of looking at the same thing” Day….. well it seems to be that for me at least.
Lets see, what has happened in the past week? I will update my training log as best I can from memory.
My Horoscope for this month as read out of some girly magazine by my loving bride, suggested that some crazy shit was going to happen this week. Specifically Tuesday and Friday. Well, nothing that I can tell has happened along the lines of what was alluded to. It said something about TODAY I was going to get a job. Actually, now that I think of it, I might be!
Today I have an appointment with the town to see about hosting a Youth race. A Splash and Dash race for kids 7-15 this summer at the local pool/park. That would/will certainly be a “job” in itself. I won’t be making any money….. but definitely a “JOB”. I sure needed something to take up all that free time I have! Read the rest of this story...
I guess I should go for a run when I get home tonight and test out these new socks!
